'The Beast In Me—Johnny Cash: Art Influenced by the Struggle of a Man'

"The beast in me is caged by frail and fragile bars."
—Johnny Cash (from a song written for him by Nick Lowe)

Rebel, lover, family man, adulterer, addict, believer, sinner—Johnny Cash is the epitome of struggle. And, while we all suffer the contest between our wickedness and our righteousness, perhaps what makes this man different from most is that he embraced both. Desires to destroy/create, compassion born from being in the muck, a joy that comes through when one knows sorrow so well—that is grace, that is Johnny Cash.

Bad men and bad women—we've all met them, we've all been 'em. This exhibit aims to recognize that sometimes the worst parts of humanity attend to its virtue; that the actual measure of man's vitality is the labor to accept our inherit ill will but to not be bent—too much—by it.

The Nave Gallery is seeking artwork, literal or interpretive, which speaks to the true spirit of this American artist. All media are welcome, including video and installation.

Organized by Jenn Harrington.

'Sacred=Art?’

The Nave is an art gallery located in a church. What does having a gallery in a "sacred space" do to the art in that space? What effect does it have on art produced for that space? A place of worship is inviting artists to display their inspirations. Does the juxtaposition allow the spiritual and artistic to inform and feed off of each other? Or does it raise questions on the appropriateness of certain subjects, fear of proselytization, and concerns about censorship and interference? The show "Sacred Spaces" wishes to answer these questions, or, at least, to propose some individual reactions to them. We invite you to submit your interpretations to be part of a collective response.

All media are welcome, including video and installation.

Organized by Ted Ollier.
